Susanna Grant is a gardener, garden designer, plant-fair organiser, and trustee of Friends of Arnold Circus. Her publications include Shade (Bloom, Frances Lincoln, 2022) and From Gardens Where We Feel Secure (Rough Trade Books, 2021).
Susanna's lecture will look at the role of the gardener in public spaces. She will explore how this role is complex but vital, intertwining creativity, communication and flexibility as well as horticultural knowledge, architecture of place, social history and politics. This type of gardening builds a sense of community, understanding and care for the spaces we inhabit and share with local wildlife. She argues that we need to create more of these generalist, caretaker roles to improve urban green space and people’s experiences of moving through them.
