While the world needs trees more than ever, tree populations must adapt to climate change and the anthropogenic spread of pathogens. Large-scale DNA sequencing and analysis provide new opportunities to understand and accelerate tree adaptation.
Richard’s lecture will describe ongoing Kew research on UK ash, oak, elm and birch, which helps us to identify trees with climate and pathogen resilience. He will explore how his research team’s findings can inform selection of trees for planting and enhance breeding programmes for tree improvement.
Professor Richard Buggs is an evolutionary biologist and molecular ecologist, and holds positions at RBG Kew and Queen Mary University London.
